If you've followed the skincare world for a while I'm sure you have heard of retinol before. Want to combat signs of aging? Retinol. Struggling with acne? Retinol. But has anyone taken the time to explain the what and why of retinol and how it works to your skins benefit? Didn't think so. Let's dive in...
What is retinol?
Retinol is comprised of Vitamin A and its natural derivatives. It has a strong influence on skin cell proliferation (production) meaning, when present, skin cells produce at an increased rate, keeping the skin looking fresh and rejuvenated. It also exfoliates and increases collagen production which is what makes it a great product to treat signs of aging by giving the skin a plump and smooth appearance.
What does retinol treat?
Retinol is a trusted treatment for acne, mild scarring, melasma, stretch marks, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and large pores. Safe for all skin types but we recommend using it PM only as it makes your skin more sensitive to the sun.
When in my routine should I use retinol?
Believe it or not, Vitamin A is not able to be synthesized in the body so it needs to be supplied to the skin. In the evening, after cleansing, apply 1-2 pumps of your chosen retinol to the face, neck and decollate. Be diligent with SPF in the am when using retinol as it increases sensitivity to the sun and the possibility of sunburn.
Our favourite retinol products available at Myuz are:
1. Retinol+ Emulsion 0.3 - iS Clinical's new retinol is a mildly resurfacing formula to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles while evening skin tone and texture for a smooth, radiant complexion. I love this formula for those that are on the dryer skin type as it's very nourishing. This formula combines Retinol of botanical origin with a proprietary blend of Bakuchiol, other powerful botanical boosters, antioxidants, and Extremozymes.
2. Concentrated Retinol Serum 1 - Environ's retinol serum step-up system has high concentrations of Vitamin A and they are designed to normalize the appearance of skin abnormalities (acne, scars, texture) and damage (dark spots). This formula is acne safe and the best to help with cell turnover. It's still a gentle formula but you can easily use this daily once acclimation is complete.
3. Rei Gentle Retinol Cream - Monastery's gently potent retinol cream brightens and moisturizes. It contains Reishi, a functional mushroom, which reduces inflammation, puffiness and free radical damage all while preventing moisture loss.
What is the "retinoid reaction"?
Retinol is an exfoliant and therefore if used too aggressively can cause flaking, redness and sensitivity. When starting a product containing Vitamin A it's best to begin slowly. Start by dipping your toes in, not with a cannon ball into the deep-end. This would look like using the product 1-2x a week use at first, as your skin gets used to it's new product, then slowly building up to daily use.
Can I use Retinol when pregnant/chest feeding?
iS Clinical's Retinol+ Emulsion 0.3 is safe for pregnant/chestfeeding individuals as it does not enter the bloodstream. Environ and Monastery retinols are not recommended during pregnancy/chestfeeding. We always recommend checking with your provider before starting anything new while pregnant.
