Vitamin C Blog Post

Vitamin C Blog Post

If you've ever googled "skin care basics" then we're sure you recognize Vitamin C as one of the top ingredients to include in your skin care routine. Vitamin C is highly recommended for all skin types, but it can be difficult to find information about why, how, and when to use it!

Why should I use Vitamin C?

There are plenty of benefits to adding Vitamin C into your routine - it provides hydration, brightens the complexion, and protects against free radical damage. Vitamin C also helps to reduce redness & hyperpigmentation, promotes collagen production, and helps with wound healing. It can also reduce TEWL (transepidermal water loss) which in turn helps to keep the skin hydrated and protected.

Vitamin C has also been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory agent through its antioxidant capacity, this means it soothes your skin and can reduce puffiness. The anti-inflammatory properties of vitamin C can also help reduce redness, which in turn can create a more even complexion.

How does it work?

Hyperpigmentation

Vitamin C use has been shown to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It does so by impeding melanin production. Melanin is a polymer that contains pigment responsible for skin colour, when its production is slowed or lessened it results in reduced pigmentation in the treated areas. This also helps to brighten the skin's appearance and even the complexion.

Collagen Production

Vitamin C is well known for boosting collagen production through the process of collagen synthesis. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that depletes over time. Lower levels of collagen can lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

Sun Protection

Sun damage is caused by molecules called free radicals. These are atoms with a missing electron. Free radicals search for other atoms from which they can “steal” an electron — and this can lead to significant damage to the skin.

Vitamin C is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect healthy skin cells by “giving” these free radicals an electron, rendering them harmless.

When should I use it?

It is best to use Vitamin C products in the morning, as it helps to protect against sun damage. Additionally, it also helps to brighten and even the complexion, as well as reduce puffiness and hydrates the skin. If you're using the product for its anti-aging or healing properties you can definitely add it into your evening routine!

Now that we've explained why Vitamin C is so important to incorporate into your routine, we're going to review the products we carry so that you can make an informed decision about what to include into your regimen!
