Without a healthy and hydrated scalp, your hair can’t be in its best shape. When you really think about it, your scalp should be cared for the same way you care for your skin. Did you know our scalp has more than 200 blood vessels, 650 sweat glands, and 1,000 nerve endings and it is, of course, the mother to our hair. Depending on our hair colour, we have between 90,000 and 200,000 hair follicles nurtured by the scalp and beautiful hair grows from healthy scalps. You want the pores to not feel ignored or plugged with polymers and stuffed with silicone and surfactants. Here are some hair tips and some ingredients you should look out for. I'm a licensed esthetician, not a hairstylist so I only know about the products we retail here at Myüz.
Tip 1:
Three ingredients we should never use are sulfates, parabens, or cyclic silicones when it comes to our hair products. Sulfates strip your hair of its natural oils, causing dehydration and sometimes an overproduction of oil in the scalp. Sulfates are chemicals used as cleansing agents in household cleaners, detergents, and even in shampoos. The powerful cleaning functions of sulfates strip hair of its essential natural oils like sebum which keeps strands moisturized, aka it dries out your hair. Parabens can throw off your hormones (which can lead to hair loss) and are a known skin irritant. The reason why parabens are still present in a lot of products is that they help preserve the shelf life of a product, but all at the expense of your hair health. It’s unfortunate, but a lot of products contain these ingredients.
Tip 2:
Common signs of an unhealthy scalp are redness, itching, irritation, and flaking. You could be shampooing too frequently, cleansing with harmful ingredients, or excluding hydration and moisture altogether. Water temperature is also a big trigger when it comes to scalp care because washing with water that’s too hot ultimately dries out your scalp and strands even further.
So what are your options to have optimal hair health?
Our favourite treatment products you can use for maintaining a healthy scalp are: Lotion P50 Capilliare, Living Libations Scalp Tonic, Crowing Glory Hair oil, Honey Myrtle Deep Conditioning hair mask and Manta Healthy Hair brush.
The Manta Healthy Hair Brush was created with love by Tim Binnington for his wife. Ultra gentle for minimum hair breakage and maximum shine. Perfect for all hair types including fine, fragile, thick, curls, coils, children, men, and hair extension wearers. The action of brushing your hair is so simple, yet so powerful! It stimulates the scalp, improves circulation, and encourages growth. Did you know, brushing your hair before washing helps remove debris or any scalp buildup, for a more efficient cleanse. Before use, bend and flex the MANTA in your hands – the more you do this the more flexible it becomes. Slide the handle in between your fingers to give you maximum control and comfort. If you need that extra exfoliation apply your shampoo into the Manta and cleanse the scalp like that! You'll notice a huge difference and perhaps those breakouts around the hairline will disappear!
Lotion P50 Capillaire will reduce itching and will regulate sebum secretions to the scalp so the scalp is rebalanced! It works so well on those with acne on their scalp! A client of ours was looking for a product for her husband who has tried everything, all of them disappointed him. Finally, P50 Capillaire did the trick. No more scalp issues!
Another great product that is all natural and baby/kid friendly is our Scalp Tonic by Living Libations. Add a few drops and massage into the scalp before washing hair or leave on overnight for a super fortifying mask. It can also be used on wet/dry hair in between washing as it will strengthen hair strands (pine and geranium monoterpenes are the ingredients that will do this for you). This will soothe dry, flaky scalps. Perfect for cradle cap for your little one!
Oiling the hair and scalp with Crowning Glory Hair Oil delivers nourishing essential oils to hair roots and scalp too. Bioactive botanicals attend to dry, flaky scalps, renovate damaged hair, smooth split ends, strengthen strands, stimulate restore shine, cleanse scalp pores and maintain the mane. Apply before shampooing or leave on overnight. For a warm oil treatment, apply enough oil to coat the hair and wrap head with warm, damp towel. The oil may also be combed through hair with natural-bristle brush or wooden comb; they feel so good on the scalp, prevent static and distribute oils evenly throughout your mane. For extra gloss and to smooth frizz and fly-aways, rub a few drops between your palms and smooth through the hair and tips.
Want a hair mask that scented with pure, organic, wild-harvested herbs and emollient oils? Look no further, we have the Honey Myrtle Deep conditioner hair mask by Living Libations. Perfect for over-processed hair and all hair types seeking strengthened hair. It can be used as a styling product on fine curly hair as well! Such a beautiful product that smells divine!
Last but not least, let's provide you with an all natural non-toxic shampoo and conditioner. Again, this is great for everyone, even your little ones. Seabuckthorn Shampoo and Shine on Conditioner. So all natural shampoo's don't have the sud. But this one...you'll get it. The mild sudsing of this shampoo comes from the combination of coco-protein and yucca root. Coco-protein is derived from the sugars, proteins and fatty acids of organic, virgin coconut oil. Yucca root is very high in saponins, the soap making ingredient, which causes the lather in our shampoo. This special root also has emollient properties, which have a soothing effect on the hair shaft. The shampoo can easily be used as a body wash, trust me you'll want to lather your body in this cause it smells like a rainforest. The shine on conditioner loves locks with emollient oils and hair-tonics, which work in tandem to awaken the lusciousness in your tresses. Bring on the shine, beauty and bounty without weighing down your hair. Shine On is a versatile libation to inspire the best condition in your hair, as it may be used on wet or dry hair.
